Hungarians will receive 'document packages' regarding the survey on Ukraine's accession to the EU, government spokesman Zoltan Kovach reported.

According to him, this package includes a list of '7 key risks of membership - issues that directly affect Hungary's future and need to be carefully considered before a decision is made.'

Among them:

  • Financial risk: Hungary will become a net contributor, and Brussels wants to draw the country into debt through joint borrowing.
  • Agricultural risk: Hungarian farmers face the loss of subsidies due to the redistribution of EU funds.
  • Food security risk: genetically modified crops and banned chemicals are used in Ukraine, which could negatively affect the quality of food products.
  • Security risk: Ukraine has previously been a center of organized crime, and weapons could fall into the wrong hands.
  • Labor market risk: cheap Ukrainian labor may reduce wages, threaten jobs, and pensions.
  • Health risk: there is no mandatory vaccination in Ukraine, which could pose a threat to public health due to open borders.
  • Pension risk: hasty accession of Ukraine could threaten 13-month pensions.

According to Kovach, voting will begin in mid-April, and Hungarians must send their ballots by mail by June 20.

Earlier, Szijjártó explained why Hungary is blocking Ukraine's EU accession.
