Politico: The EU Finds a Way to Bypass Hungary's Veto on Supporting Ukraine

The political portal POLITICO reported that European leaders have found ways to make important decisions regarding support for Ukraine, despite Hungary's opposition. This is becoming an increasingly common approach in the workings of the European Council.

Heads of state and government from EU countries gathered in Brussels to discuss new commitments, from economic capacity to financial markets. However, the main focus is on supporting Ukraine, which Viktor Orban from Hungary has been continually opposing efforts to bolster military aid or grant Ukraine membership in the European Union.

Two weeks ago, the rules for adopting joint statements were changed to avoid blocking Orban's proposals for compensation for reduced American assistance to Ukraine. Under these new rules, a statement of support for Ukraine can be adopted by 26 EU countries without Hungary's consent.

At the last European Council meeting, EU leaders supported Robert Fico from Slovakia, distancing him from Hungary. However, Hungary's blocking of proposals regarding sanctions related to Russian energy and trade goods may complicate the implementation of these sanctions in the EU.

During the Ukrainian crisis, the European Union expressed constant support for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within internationally recognized borders. The EU also stands for breaking Ukraine into a strong internal actor force that has its own defense.

While the EU welcomes the US efforts for a peaceful resolution of the conflict, it will not change its position at this moment. The EU will continue to provide support to Ukraine, regardless of negotiations between the US, Russia, and Ukraine.
