Climate expert named vegetables whose cultivation is at risk due to global warming.

Impact of global warming on vegetable cultivation in Ukraine
Agriculture in Ukraine is under significant influence from global warming, which threatens traditional vegetable cultivation. Changes in climatic conditions particularly affect potatoes, cabbage, and cucumbers. This was reported by PhD in Geography Vera Balabukh in her interview with Glavcom.
«Potatoes are heavily influenced by rising air temperatures. In June, when potatoes start to gain weight, the soil temperature should be moderate to avoid rot. Potato cultivation in southern Ukraine is already problematic,» explained the geographer.
According to Vera Balabukh, it is necessary to change technologies and planting times for potatoes to ensure stable yields. Similar problems are observed with cabbage and cucumbers, which require additional irrigation and shading due to a lack of moisture.
The climatologist emphasizes that the success of this year's harvest will depend on rainfall during the ripening period. Frequent but small rains are favorable, while heavy downpours can negatively affect the harvest. Meteorological forecasts will provide more accurate information about weather conditions.
Analyst Maksym Hoppka noted that an increase in potato prices and its status as an import crop can be expected in April 2025. Additionally, due to high demand for greenhouse vegetables, an increase in cucumber prices is observed in Ukraine.
