AFU hold the defense, Russians advance in four regions of the ISW map.

Ukrainian defense forces successfully repel mechanized enemy assaults involving a significant amount of equipment. At the same Time, the advancement of Russian troops near Liptsi, Kupiansk, Kreminna, Toretsk, as well as in the Kursk region has been recorded. This is stated in the report of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Kharkiv direction
In the Kharkiv region, as of September 21, Russian forces have slightly advanced near Liptsi and Vovchansk. Geolocation data published on September 20 show that Russian troops have taken positions in a dacha area west of the village of Hlyboke. Ukrainian forces in this direction discovered two Russian motorcycles that were trying to reach the forward positions of the 11th Russian Tank Regiment but were blown up.
It has also become known that in the Kharkiv direction, the Russian command involved units of Chechen fighters of Akhmat. Their role is to force Russian soldiers into active offensives, including through harsh methods such as punishments and even executions.
Luhansk Region
In the Luhansk region on September 21, Russian troops likely captured the village of Kyslivka southeast of Kupiansk and continue to attack in the area of Nevske, although the exact situation remains unclear. According to geolocation data, the invaders advanced west of the village of Kyslivka, which indicates a possible capture of the settlement. However, the presence of Russian troops in Nevske has not yet been confirmed.
Fighting also continues in the northern part of Makiivka and around other settlements west of Kreminna, including near Synkivka, Kruhliakivka, Stepova Novoselivka, and Lozova.
Donetsk Region
Russian forces continue offensive operations in the Donetsk region. On September 20 and 21, the invaders attacked AFU positions southeast of Siversk, in the area of Vyimka and Chasiv Yar, but without success. Also, Russian troops tried to break through near Kalynivka, Ivanivske, and Andriivka.
According to Ukrainian military data, Russian infantry in these directions use buggies, motorcycles, and all-terrain vehicles due to significant losses of heavy equipment. Despite the invaders' attempts, they could not advance further.
Geolocation footage also shows slight advancement of the Russians in Toretsk, particularly on the central streets of the city. However, there are no confirmed significant successes in this direction.
Southern Direction
In the south, in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, active fighting continued. Russian troops continued attacks in the areas of Huliaipole, Robotyne, Lobkove, and Mala Tokmachka. According to Russian sources, Russian air defense shot down two Ukrainian guided bombs near occupied Tokmak.
Positional battles also continue on the left bank of the Kherson region. Russian forces are trying to hold their positions while conducting local offensives.
According to reports, Russian "war correspondents" claim that Russian troops shot down several Ukrainian missiles over occupied Crimea.
