Zelensky denied statements about Ukraine preparing to create nuclear weapons
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is not preparing to create nuclear weapons. He stated this during a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Zelensky rejected such accusations and explained that his previous statements concerned the Budapest Memorandum.
Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons in exchange for guarantees of territorial integrity and sovereignty, receiving them from nuclear-armed countries including Russia, China, and the USA. The President stressed the importance of Ukraine's membership in NATO since the country is already practically a part of the Alliance.
Zelensky also mentioned his conversation with Donald Trump regarding Ukraine's accession to NATO and nuclear weapons issues. Their dilemma is that Ukraine has to choose between having nuclear weapons as protection or joining the alliance. Currently, there are no effective alliances besides NATO.
The President also reported that most EU leaders supported his "victory plan," which includes not only military measures but also economic ones. He also mentioned information regarding North Korea's preparation of people for the war in Ukraine and discussions with partners on long-range strikes deep into Russia.
