European countries are proposing to add changes to the draft resolution of the UN General Assembly regarding the third anniversary of the Russian war against Ukraine. The purpose of these changes is to reflect the position of the majority of countries and emphasize the need to restore Ukraine's territorial integrity and recognize Russia as an aggressor. The possibility of adopting a Security Council resolution on this issue is also being considered.

The EU and the UK have proposed three amendments to the US draft currently under consideration.

It is expected that at the General Assembly, at least two draft resolutions will be discussed. One is proposed by a group of democratic countries, including Ukraine, and the other is the American one.

The US draft, titled 'Path to Peace', does not take into account the restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity and does not name Russia as an aggressor. It consists of a single sentence calling for a quick end to the conflict and the achievement of lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.

European countries propose to replace 'Russian-Ukrainian conflict' with 'full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine'. They also wish to add a point confirming the commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Ukraine. The draft amendments will also include the words 'just and comprehensive' regarding peace and will add that this is in accordance with the UN Charter and the principles of sovereign equality and territorial integrity of states.

On February 24, there will be a meeting of the emergency special session of the General Assembly dedicated to the third anniversary of the Russian war against Ukraine. The adoption of the corresponding resolution is expected. To adopt resolutions on issues of peace and security, a two-thirds majority of the total votes of the countries that voted 'for' or 'against' is required.

On February 24, the UN Security Council will also discuss the situation in Ukraine due to aggression from the Russian Federation and may consider the corresponding resolution being prepared by the US. Deputy Foreign Minister Maryana Betza will participate in the events.
