Ukraine plans to import up to 800 million cubic meters of gas from Europe
Ukraine intends to import up to 800 million cubic meters of gas from Europe during February and March, as domestic production has significantly decreased by 40% due to missile strikes from Russia.
According to Reuters, Ukraine previously extracted about 52 million cubic meters of gas per day, while winter consumption ranged from 110 to 140 million cubic meters.
'This heating season, we could have done without imports, but attacks on production force us to import gas to compensate for the reduction in domestic production'
The current level of gas extraction is not disclosed, but it is known that the main gas production facilities in Ukraine are located in Kharkiv and Poltava regions, close to the front line, making them vulnerable to Russian attacks.
Gas reserves in Ukrainian storage facilities are currently low, but thanks to planned imports and domestic extraction, Ukraine will be able to get through the heating season without restrictions for the population and industry. At the beginning of the heating season, reserves amounted to 12.9 billion cubic meters, and by the end of this season, it will be necessary to start injecting gas for the next winter season of 2025/26, gathering about 13 billion cubic meters.
The volumes of gas imports after March have not yet been determined and will depend on the level of recovery of domestic production, which is directly related to the intensity of Russian attacks.
Naftogaz responded to the question of whether there will be enough gas reserves by the end of the heating season.
