Friedrich Merz Supports Supply of Taurus Missiles to Ukraine

The leader of the opposition German bloc CDU/CSU and chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz has once again supported the provision of Taurus missiles to Ukraine. He called them 'a building block for restoring peace in Ukraine.'

The USA, France, and Great Britain are already supplying Ukraine with long-range missiles, yet they still have not become 'a warring party.'

However, Merz emphasized that sending German peacekeepers requires consensus with Russia and adherence to international law.

If there is a peace agreement and if Ukraine needs guarantees to ensure it, then this can only be discussed if there is a mandate in accordance with international law. At this Time, I do not see this. I would like this mandate to be in consensus with Russia, not in conflict - said Merz.

Merz also noted that the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine needs to be addressed in the coming weeks or even months.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on the other hand, expressed concerns about supplying Taurus missiles to Ukraine, calling it 'playing Russian roulette with Germany's security.' Such views differ from Merz's position.
