The energy system requires 2.2 GW of maneuverable generation - forecast.

The Ukrainian energy system needs development, states acting chairman of the board of NEC 'Ukrenergo' Oleksiy Brecht. During Energy Day 2025, he noted that over the next 10 years it is necessary to build 2.2 GW of maneuverable generation and 1.5 GW of energy storage systems.
'In terms of maneuverable generation, we will need the completion and commissioning of almost 2.2 GW of capacity to ensure the balancing of the energy system over the next 10 years. Also - almost 1.5 GW of capacities for energy storage facilities,' Brecht emphasized.
Brecht also noted that thanks to long-term procurement auctions for ancillary services, the energy system's need for frequency support reserves has already been fully met. However, he pointed out the uneven development of certain types of renewable energy in Ukraine, promising consultations with businesses to promote the development of wind, biogas, and small hydroelectric stations.
According to the acting chairman of the board of NEC 'Ukrenergo', the Ukrainian energy system needs important and strategic steps for development. In particular, the construction of maneuverable generation and energy storage systems is essential for ensuring the efficiency and stability of the energy system in the future.
