From June 20, 2025, all smartphones in the European Union must comply with new standards aimed at increasing environmental sustainability and lifespan. Essentially, these new requirements will insist that your device be more durable and reliable, as well as protected from drops, dust, and moisture. Furthermore, manufacturers will be obligated to guarantee that smartphone batteries retain at least 80% of their capacity after 800 charge cycles. The changes will also enhance the availability of spare parts and software updates. Manufacturers will be required to provide repair parts within 5-10 days of receiving a request, as well as ensure operating system updates for at least five years after sales of the model have ceased. All these requirements must be clearly indicated on environmental labels that will be attached to each smartphone. Repairability and upgradability of devices will become important factors when choosing a smartphone. It is also worth mentioning that the trade war has led to a decrease in smartphone exports from China to the USA.
