150 people have died in the Democratic Republic of Congo due to an unknown disease
In November, about 150 people died in the southwestern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo from a disease that is unknown. Local authorities reported this, citing Reuters and the Economic Times.
According to the governor and the minister of health of the Kwango province, the sick had flu-like symptoms such as high fever and severe headaches.
A medical team was sent to the Panzi health zone to collect samples and conduct tests to identify the disease.
Community leader Seforien Manzana stated that the situation is concerning as the number of sick people is increasing. He also noted that the supply of medicines to the rural area of Panzi is a problem, causing people to die in their homes.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is investigating the situation together with the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Earlier in Africa, cases of monkeypox were reported among refugees. The head of public health at UNHCR, Allen Maina, noted that this disease attacks the most vulnerable groups of the population, including refugees. He emphasized the problems faced by refugees, such as limited access to water, soap, and food, as well as difficulties in accessing medical assistance.
Data from the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates a more than 500% increase in monkeypox cases on the continent compared to last year. The highest number of cases and deaths occurs in Central Africa.
In the West African continent, the spread of the disease is believed to have resulted from efforts by meat traders practicing harmful living habits, namely, recently killed monkeys. In addition, gorilla, chimpanzee, and other monkeys, which humans often have contact with, were very actively leaving the continent from the Sahara.
