U.S. President Donald Trump spent the weekend organizing fundraising events for himself at his own resort properties, despite an ongoing financial crisis caused by his own decisions, reports The New York Times.

On Thursday, after American markets collapsed following the announcement of new global tariffs, Trump headed to Florida for his villa in Miami to participate in a golf tournament sponsored by the Saudi sovereign fund, and a series of charity dinners at Mar-a-Lago, each bringing in up to $20 million.

On April 2, Trump announced new tariffs, leading to one of the largest market crashes in American history - within two days, companies in the S&P 500 lost $5 trillion in market value. However, as the outlet reports, this seemed not to affect the president's plans. The 643-room Trump Doral had no available rooms, including the presidential suite priced at $13,000 a night, and there were no free seats at the BLT Prime restaurant, where a steak portion costs $130.

Besides the golf tournament organized by the LIV Golf league, headed by the managing director of the $925 billion Saudi fund Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the U.S. President hosted yet another dinner at Mar-a-Lago with donations of $1 million from each guest. Among the attendees were billionaires Ronald Lauder and Steve Wynn. This is already the fifth such fundraiser since Trump's election in November, with the next scheduled for April 24.

Continuation of events

Experts note that this practice continues the trend of Trump's first term, when the president actively used his position to attract business to family ventures. Among the sponsors of the tournament in Doral are not only the Saudi sovereign fund but also Saudi Aramco, Riyadh Air, and TikTok - a Chinese company whose fate is currently being decided by the Trump administration.

'It's all about business and money,' said Tyrell Davis, a 39-year-old entrepreneur who spent Saturday in Palm Beach. 'America is business. It's a corporation.'

As The New York Times reports, while the president enjoyed golfing at his third resort over the weekend in Jupiter, Florida, his political committee was offering supporters the chance to buy a signed copy of an order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for a minimum donation of $50.

According to Wired magazine, Trump hosts private meetings with business elite representatives at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida for large monetary contributions, where businessmen can arrange a personal audience with the head of state for $5 million.
