New Pope Leo XIV celebrated his first mass in the Sistine Chapel
After the death of Pope Francis, Leo XIV held his first mass with the college of cardinals. A lunch is planned after the ceremony, attended by the cardinals who elected him yesterday.
During the service, Leo XIV used various languages to reflect his multilingual heritage. The main rite was the Eucharist, in which cardinals and laypeople participated.
On the first day of the conclave, black smoke signaled the failure to reach unity among the cardinals. Before the conclave began, the cardinals took solemn oaths to maintain strict secrecy - breaking these oaths leads to dismissal from the church.
Leo XIV is also set to pray the 'Queen of Heaven' prayer from the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica on Sunday, May 11. The new Pope is American Robert Prevost, the first American pope in history. Greetings from the new pope were sent by the President of Ukraine and the head of the United States.
