Ukrainian Volunteer Day 2025: history of the holiday, wishes in verses, prose and postcards.

On March 14, Ukraine celebrates Volunteer Day annually. This day was established by the Parliament of Ukraine in 2017 to honor the courage and heroism of those who defended the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the country.

History of the holiday's establishment

March 14 is regarded as the birthday of the Ukrainian volunteer movement. On this day in 2014, the first 500 volunteers of the Maidan Self-Defense arrived at the training ground in Novy Petrivtsi, forming the first volunteer battalion.

During the Russian armed aggression in eastern Ukraine, volunteer units participated in both defensive and offensive operations. For instance, during the defense of Donetsk airport, alongside the special forces of the 3rd Separate Regiment, soldiers from the 79th, 80th, 81st, 95th Separate Airborne Units, as well as the 93rd and 72nd Separate Motorized Brigades, the 1st Separate Tank Battalion, the 57th Separate Motorized Battalion, the 91st Separate Regiment, the 90th Separate Airborne Battalion, and the 74th Separate Reconnaissance Battalion, there were also soldiers from the Dnipro-1 Regiment and the Ukrainian Volunteer Corps (DUK), the OUN battalion, and others.

On January 17, 2017, the Parliament of Ukraine adopted a resolution establishing Volunteer Day. Its initiators were 12 deputies, including then-Parliament Chairman Andriy Parubiy and well-known Euromaidan activist Mykhailo Havryliuk.

"It is precisely thanks to the participants of the battalions and volunteer formations, who actively formed and went to the conflict zone, that it was possible to create a truly capable fighting army and prevent the enemy from advancing further into Ukraine," said the justification for this resolution.

The resolution indicated that Volunteer Day is established to honor the courage and heroism of the defenders of independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine, to support the further strengthening of patriotic spirit in society, to enhance social attention and care for participants of volunteer formations and to support the initiative of the community.

One of the most well-known volunteer battalions in our Time is the Azov Regiment, formed in May 2014 in Mariupol. Also, starting in February 2023, the "Assault Guard" has begun to form in Ukraine – assault brigades that recruit volunteers to resist Russian aggression.
