Today, November 30, Ukraine celebrates the memory of one of the apostles of Jesus Christ - Andrew the First-Called.

History

According to ancient legends, Andrew was a fisherman and became a disciple of John the Baptist before becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ. He was one of the first whom Jesus invited to follow him. After the resurrection of Christ, the apostle actively preached the Gospel in different countries. Then he suffered a martyr's death in the city of Patras, located in Greece - he was crucified on a cross that had the shape of the letter 'X', now known as Andrew's cross.

Traditions

The religious holiday of Andrew the First-Called in Ukraine is closely linked to pagan traditions. Another name for this holiday is Kalita. On this day, festivals were often held - Andrew's evening gatherings and a special loaf in the shape of the sun - kalita - was baked.

At the same Time, the church condemns any conspiracies or other magical actions as they are manifestations of pagan beliefs.
