A cargo ship with hazardous materials on board sank near the coast of India
On Saturday, May 24, the MSC ELSA 3 cargo ship sank near the city of Kochi with hazardous cargo on board. There were 24 sailors from various countries on board, including Ukraine, Georgia, Russia, and the Philippines. All of them were rescued from the sunken vessel. The ship, which is 184 meters long, sent a distress signal during its voyage.
It was reported that there were 640 containers on board the ship, including 13 with hazardous cargo and 12 with calcium carbide, which can produce flammable gas upon contact with water. Additionally, the vessel contained about 370 tons of fuel and oil. Fortunately, there is currently no data on fuel spills, but the authorities are prepared for potential environmental contamination.
The Indian Coast Guard stated: 'We are fully prepared to respond to the possible consequences of this situation, as the marine ecosystem of this region is very vulnerable.'
Such incidents are becoming increasingly common worldwide, and it is important to strengthen safety and environmental responsibility measures in the maritime industry.
