Baltic Security: Latvia to Test Underwater Infrastructure Protection System.

Latvian Radio and Television Center Plans to Protect Underwater Communication Systems in the Baltic Sea
The State Joint Stock Company 'Latvian State Radio and Television Center' (LVRTC) plans to conduct testing of sensors that will help protect underwater communication systems in the Baltic Sea. According to the TV3 program 'Nekā personīga', it is planned to cover the cable with sensors along its entire length and create a corridor up to five kilometers wide for detecting vessels that are near the underwater cable.
Girts Ozols, chairman of the LVRTC board, explains that negotiations are currently underway regarding quantum and seismic sensors that could be used to protect marine infrastructure or to improve monitoring systems. Testing of these sensors is planned for this summer with the aim of implementing them by autumn 2025. In the future, the sensors may be connected to drone systems.
The damage to the LVRTC underwater cable in the Baltic Sea prompted the investigation of criminal cases, confirming the consequences of equipment and navigation deficiencies. Additionally, the program revealed that Latvia may begin acquiring new drone systems starting next year, and the Minister of Defense is already considering prototypes to determine their competitiveness.
