Ukrainians were informed how much a pack of cigarettes costs in different countries around the world.

As reported by 'Hvylya', this is mentioned in the material of 'Slovo i dilo'.

Next year, significant price increases for cigarettes are expected in Ukraine due to an increase in the excise tax. According to the forecasts of the Center for Economic Strategy, the price of a pack may rise by 20-25 hryvnias, although some experts suggest an increase of up to 40 hryvnias.

The government has two main goals with this decision. Firstly, to fill the state budget through additional tax revenues. Secondly, to create a so-called 'social effect' – reducing the number of smokers, which in the long run should improve the health of the population and increase life expectancy.

Despite the unpleasant price increase for cigarettes awaiting Ukrainians, it is worth noting that in other countries of the world, the price of tobacco products in Ukraine will still remain relatively low compared to prices in many other countries.

For comparison, the publication took one of the most popular brands of cigarettes. In Ukraine, a pack of cigarettes costs about 2.88 dollars.

According to data from the Center for Economic Strategy, the price of a pack of cigarettes in various countries around the world looks like this:

  • in Norway - 13.41 dollars;
  • in Hong Kong - 13.12 dollars;
  • in Singapore - 12.61 dollars;
  • in France - 12.04 dollars;
  • in the Netherlands - 11.62 dollars;
  • in Israel - 10.65 dollars;
  • in Finland - 10.52 dollars;
  • in Switzerland - 10.09 dollars;
  • in Sri Lanka - 9.61 dollars;
  • in Belgium - 9.42 dollars;
  • in Denmark - 8.77 dollars;
  • in Germany - 8.58 dollars;
  • in Saudi Arabia - 7.45 dollars;
  • in Austria - 6.54 dollars.

Thus, the price of cigarettes in Ukraine remains the lowest among these countries.

However, the high cost of cigarettes also has its negative consequences. In countries with high tobacco prices, there is a widespread black market where cigarettes are sold much cheaper.

In particular, in Australia, almost a quarter of smokers consume unbranded tobacco due to the high price of official cigarettes.

It is also worth noting that the highest percentage of smokers among adults is in countries where the price of cigarettes is lower, such as the USA (14%) and Ukraine.

Thus, the price of cigarettes in Ukraine may increase, but will still remain lower compared to many other countries in the world.

We remind you that supermarkets have set new prices for sunflower oil, buckwheat, potatoes, and cabbage.
