Anna Makymenko is the youngest Ukrainian fencer to win a Grand Prix

Ukrainian fencer Anna Makymenko, at the age of 17, became the winner of the Grand Prix fencing tournament in Budapest. This achievement surpassed the results of Olga Harlan and Yana Shemyakina. Olga Harlan was the winner in sabre at the age of 18, while Yana Shemyakina won the gold medal in the Grand Prix in foil at 24 years old.

Anna Makymenko is the first successful Ukrainian fencer in 2020.

This victory is a great accomplishment for Anna, as she had not previously achieved such success in international competitions. She is also the youngest champion of Ukraine, having won this title at the age of 16. Anna improved her physical endurance over the year, which helped her secure victory at the Grand Prix.

“I didn’t even think I had surpassed Olya Harlan. I am just satisfied with my result. I believe this is a cool achievement,” said Makymenko.

In the final, Anna competed against Olympic champion of Paris Julia Rizzi. After a tough match, Anna was able to turn the tide and win. She inspired her coach and proved her strong side.

“I was worried, but I wanted to show myself in the best light. My victory was the result of my coach's support and my focus in the decisive moment,” Anna Makymenko said.

In the future, Anna plans to compete in the junior world fencing championship in China. She also hopes to participate in major adult competitions.
